In Which I Edit

So October has been my own personal editing month - a PeNoEdMo, if you will.

I made myself a little spreadsheet (because I know you all know how much I LOVES spreadsheets) to keep track of where I'm at.

BEHOLD!

As you can see, when I took this screen print it was last week. (UPDATE - I added a more recent screenshot)

It's not a super pretty spreadsheet (unlike my NaNo counter which has colors and special formatting and junk. I'll whip that baby out once NaNo has started)

I've been pretty good about doing the line edits, but not as great transcribing the changes onto the digital copy. Le Sigh.

Ah well, I'm totes on track to be done with the line edits before the beginning of NaNoWriMo (Excitement!!!)

Are you ready for NaNo? Have you been editing, and if so, how's that going for you?

  1. I've given up on current novel work. I just can't concentrate on that and nano prep. So alas, I've been nano prepping. I'm halfway through The Snowflake Method and I'm discovering more about my characters. Now to get alll my scenes mapped out. I want to see this spreadsheet you speak of (the one for nano) and I want to see it now!

  2. Wow! Who knew that with a hat like that, you could produce a spreadsheet like that! Amazing! What else can you pull out of that awesome hat?:))

  3. Hannah - sometimes that's what you need to do.
I'll add a post about that spreadsheet closer to Nano

Anne - no YOU'RE the nerd!

Yokohama - i wish i could pull out a lot of money, because that would be awesome

  5. I'm planning my NaNo novel now. I'm excited!

I love the idea of keeping track of your editing process on a spreadsheet. It's super organized!

  6. Dear Lord, you are super organised! Wow! I'm impressed.

  9. OMG my head just exploded!

You have a spreadsheet for editing???!? (and first drafts?)

Dude, I don't even know HOW to make a spreadsheet, because I've never been in the least interested or motivated to make one. I make handwritten to-do lists each day and that is the extent of my life's organizing.
(you already know I don't outline)

    Wow.
Um, I'm going to go ruminate on the fact that you have a spread sheet for editing.

    Do you iron your underwear?

    Love,
    Lola

  10. Alex - YAYAY!

Lola - pshaa. The only reason i like spreadsheets is because they appeal to both my creative and my organized brain. I can make fun formulas to do the math for me, and then i get to make it pretty. It's full of win

  11. Sorry to post twice--just realized that this week's Manglish is notebooks. I should send you one:)) Do you want "usable in various uses" or "a look of fearless determination DAUNTLESS"? ;-)

  12. You should check out the AutoCrit Editing Wizard. It's great if you like numbers as a motivator :-)

  13. Not ready for NaNoWriMo! I have way too many projects. I'm not editing anything yet, but I am rushing to get my current w.i.p. draft finished. Good luck with your edits. I love your spreadsheets!

  15. Holly - they are fun! I never knew this until i was forced to make some for my job

Yokohama - Ha! oh definitely "fearless determination DAUNTLESS!"

Janine - hmmm, that sounds like something i need to check out like RIGHT NOW

Vegas - i'm just worried that if i don't get the line edits done before NaNo, that i won't get them done ever

Kelly - Oh they're super easy. I mean, you can make them more difficult if you want, but just a regular plain one is easy peasy

  16. Yes and yes!!! I've been editing, but the step before you are at--I've been doing a cold read after it has sat for about 6 months and I am taking notes on big things to change and doing a broad eval.

I can't help myself, so HAVE been marking edits too, but not the microscopic level... that will come in December after I do the BIG fixes. (though I've also done some of those big fixes as I go... have about 15 new pages...

Totally ready to get back to writing, but I am only half way through the read through, thus far...

  17. NEEEEERRRRRDDDDD!!!!

    (and that's coming from ME).

I'm totes not ready for NaNo. Seriously dreading it, at this point.

Hoping to do some major snowflaking this weekend.

  18. Hart - i still have some big changes to make, but i just couldn't concentrate on them while there were typos and junk

Teebore - phsaaa, you've got plenty of time still. It took me like a few hours to really get a handle on my NaNo piece. All i have to do now is make a scene list which i plan to do on Sunday

  19. Question for you, Sarah! Can you use nano as just a writing tool and somehow keep others from reading your stuff (your total crap)? I really want to try it, but don't want others to read my stuff yet. I would like to use it as a training / discipline tool.

  20. Oh my heck. I think I just broke out into a tiny rash. I so don't do things like this--but I'm glad it works for you!

And good luck with NaNo--I may or may not participate.

  21. Holy moley, a spreadsheet! You're so super organized if I didn't love ya I'd be jealous!

  22. Hi--thanks for commenting on my Miyazaki query! Lovely to find another fan:)) And--you pretty much had the answer! You totally get a notebook ("Dauntless!") :))

  23. I wish I could make a spreadsheet! I can't even really read the one you have here properly... Or maybe I'm over complicating it, I don't really know.

Also, I just want to say, (since I'm new) that I wish I had your steampunk writing hat! Serious.

  24. Kodas - oh yeah. No one can read your stuff unless you give it to them. No worries there, because we're all writing some sort of crap in November

    Elana - that's cuz you're a CRAZY PANTSER!

Kittie - Hah! the spreadsheet helps me fight laziness

Yokohama - YAYAY! i was pretty sure about my answer, but since i don't speak more that a teensy bit of japanese, i wasn't sure

Melissa - all my excel knowledge is self taught. Once i was like you and would have fainted at the site of this spreadsheet. And thanks about the hat! It seems to be pretty popular

And so they spoke. And it was awesome, covered in sauce.
