In Which I Make New Goals

All right, time to get going with these 2012 goals! Time’s a wasting!

2012 Goals

  1. Query Glimpse of Another Shore
  2. Query Break Free
  3. Finish another novel
  4. Sell another short story
  5. Attend a writer’s conference
  6. Join a new crit group or find some more crit partners
  7. Go on a date
  8. Lose weight
  9. Read 60 books

      1.  I stopped after two months last year to make some changes on the MS. But because I was in
the middle of writing Break Free, and then had NaNo, the revision got pushed back more than
expected. BUT I think it’ll be ready to give the agent waters another test starting in February.
           Maybe a bit earlier.

  1. Once I start querying Glimpse again, I’ll work on finishing this bad boy up. It needs line edits and beta readers, but I think it’s very strong. I’m hoping for a late spring/early summer query date, but we’ll see where we’re at with Glimpse. I don’t know if people query more than one novel at a time but I don’t know if I could handle the confusion and the double roller coaster.

  1. I’ll probably tackle All That Remains, even though I still have rough feelings about it. I mean, I’m like 50K in. It shouldn’t take much just to push that baby through to the end. I also plan on writing my Shiny New Idea in 2012 as well, but whether I’ll do that for NaNo or not, I’m not sure. Time will tell

  1. Again, like last year, I don’t have much control of this. The best I can do is submit some stories and see if I get any bites. I’ve got 3 in the wings that I plan to submit this year, hopefully. I’d also like to see if I can get into SFWA, though the horror markets that grant you membership are few and far between.

  1. I’ve gone to Fourth Street Fantasy the last two years, but that’s not necessarily a writing conference. This year, I’m going to hit one with actual agents and junk. I’m aiming for Wiscon, so let me know if you’re planning to hit it up to. I WANT TO MEET UP WITH YOU if you do.

  1. I’m part of my existing writing group with Hannah and Teebore, and I love it, but I’d also like to get to know other writers as well, especially locally, so I’m going to see what I can do. If I can’t get in one locally, through SCBWI, then I’ll probably be looking online for some more crit partners especially people who may be at the same stage as me (querying, etc) (hint hint, if you’re looking)

  1. Yep. That’s just what it sounds like. Even if it’s just a single date, that’s fine by me.

  1. Always a goal. We got new treadmills this year, which is awesome, but our poor elliptical died on us. We'll be tackling Couch to 5K in our hopes we can hit a Warrior Dash this year. Anyway, excercise is not really the problem, nor is eating healthy. It’s just portion control. Once more into the breach
Warrior Dash, here we come!

  1. 55 Books was touch and go, but I made it. So I have to raise the bar. Will I be able to hit 60 books read? I have no idea. Guess we’ll find out this time next year.

And that’s it!  How about you? What are some of your goals for 2012?

I mostly plan on enjoying myself and working hard at the stuff that really matters. Work was stressful last year and moving sucked, so now I just want to settle into a routine and relax. I'm going to work hard at getting a lot more stuff written and tightening my craft. I'd love to be at the querying stage by the end of the year, so editing will be a strong focus as well.

Those are great goals!

My goals involve a lot of reading, writing, and editing. I rarely make life goals, though.

@Hannah- and Warrior Dash too, right?!

Holy moly... I'm so glad I'm reading this!

1) If you want a reader, I will GLADLY be a pair of eyes for you. Let me know what I can do to help.

2) Wiscon? If I can make it happen, I will absolutely go! I've heard about this a few years in a row and would love to make the trip.

3) Every spring, my friends and I run the Roseville Library 5k. Super laid back and a good mix of runners/walkers. And it's for a library. Um, hello?! No brainer. You should to it.

4) I'm back in the online dating world, navigating all the pros and cons that come with the territory. If you're interested in knowing more, shoot me an email. I can't write a query letter, but I'm all about personal statements. We could swap! :)

That's fine, you hate us, tevs...

Seriously though, my goals for this year?

1. Get into shape, physically and financially.

2. Revise "Onwards and Upwards" into a query-able state.

3. Do NaNo again, whether with a new idea, or just by cheating and finishing NaNo 2010's idea.

4. Write more blog posts.

5. Expand the blog's readership, which is one of those nebulous things I neither know how to do nor how to judge the success of.

I hope that both of your queries get huge contracts that publish your books at exactly the same time thereby tearing a hole in the universe as you try to devote time to both publishers who expect you to be at their every beck and call. I will laugh at your success and say, "It serves your right for querying two books at the same time."

@ Michael- LMFAO!
also- i like that you're from the future. Anything we need to know about?

Fabulous goals! You can do 60 books. That's more than reasonable. I wish I had a treadmill. I have an exercise bike. It and I don't get along, but it's the only thing I have. I have yet to pull it out of the garage and we're 11 days into the new year.

Go on a date... that sounds so sad! Well, not the date itself. At least we hope not. And do you really hate Teebore now?

Good list. We share some of the same goals this year. Best of luck on yours.

Those are awesome goals. AND a lot of goals. I'm still refining mine. :)

I moved my blog, but there is a feed problem with my old blog and the posts aren’t showing up. You can visit my new blog here.

Great goals and good luck accomplishing all of them!

My goals are mostly geared toward my writing.

Good goals. I wish you luck in achieving them. Mine are simple, to finish the novels I've started and to query 1.

These are fantastic!! I wish you all the best with each one of them!

I'm looking into a conference this year too... not sure which yet, though it won't be a science fiction one, sorry! :)

I'm also looking at submitting a short story or two this year, but I have no idea where to start looking. lol. Not sure if I'm lazy or intimidated. hahaha

2012 is our year!! :)

I might be able to make it to Wiscon! I would go and hawk my Fireseed novel. I joined Broad Universe. Ever hear of it? They might have a table there. It would be fun to meet up with you. I'll keep you posted. Catheirne

That's a good range of goals you've got. The warrior dash sounds intriguing too. Good luck accomplishing them this year!

I love that your goals are focused around actionable tasks. Yay! Plus: warrior dash looks AMAZING.

I'm feeling inspired by this post, especially the part about WisCon. Why do I not go to more conferences? I should go to conferences.

My goals are slowly taking shape (along with the plan to achieve them), and hopefully I'll have them finalized before Thanksgiving! :)

Best of luck on yours!

Ooh, the scariness of goals, since I almost never make them.

Write more
Edit more
Query a Book
Read 115 Books (Eh... I'm in school now so we'll see)

And yeah. That's about it.

Good luck with your goals! I know you can back it. Huzzah!
