In Which I Make A Hodge Podge

Is hodge podge two words?
I dunno and I'm too lazy to look it up.

(*Update: I ended up looking it up. Turns out it's hyphenated)

This post is going to be a mix of unrelated weird things, because I'm a bit behind on some other things and not focused enough to concentrate on a "real" post.

Yesterday I forgot to include the pics I took of a few line edited pages, for you curious sort (hey, I'm curious too) so here you go.

Also I had saved this Lolcat a few weeks ago to share and forgot about it.

Last weekend we replaced my old ceiling fan (which only worked on one setting, and in which the light did not work at all) with a new one. I forgot to take a before pic, but here's a middle and after pic.

aren't my baby blackout curtains awesome? (sarcasm)

Here's a dumb question for all you blog techie people. In general, I'm able to figure most things about by using teh googles, but this one has me stumped.

So many of you have beautiful "Pages" attached to your blogs, where I can click and find your contact info etc (as you can see, my pages option is stuck at "Home" for right now)
What I want is a little Facebook icon that, when people click on it, leads them to my Facebook profile so they can send me a friend request if they so desire.

Now I know how to do that with a link, but that's ugly. I want a pretty little blue square with an F in the middle. Like what Roni has over at Fiction Groupie. Whenever I search blogger or teh googles for this, all I find are people telling me how to add a Facebook Share option to my blog (which I already have).

I am accepting help from anyone who is using this little icon.

I'm sorry I haven't been commenting on many blogs the last few days., I don't typically travel the interwebs over the weekend and since I had Thursday and Friday off from work, it was like an extended weekend where I didn't really read any blogs.

The same may happen this Friday as well. BUT in between those weekend and "faux" weekend days, I'll be commenting as usual.

Anyone have any good ways or recipes for cooking veggies? We're pretty tired of steaming them or boiling them here. We have a grill as well, but that's new. I will take any suggestions.

Also I signed up for Roni's "Let's Talk" blogfest. I don't participate in a lot of blogfests (mostly because I feel I should be working on other things, not because I don't think they look fun) but I couldn't ignore this one becasue I love to write me some dialogue.

Well that's it for this hodge podge. BUT I suspect this may become a bit of a regular feature from time to time.

You've got me stumped. Me and HTML stuff don't go well together and it takes me forever to figure out how to do anything new to my blog.

Good luck!

Huh, fun range of topics. Thanks for sharing Sarah.

Don't know about the FB icon option but why don't you just ask Roni? She's usually pretty helpful.

Veggies on the grill, especially onions and peppers, just brush with olive oil or balsamic vinegar, or both, and sear briefly, but be careful not to overcook.

I had the big old FB mess, but deleted it cause it was so ugly. Sorry, I'm no help.

Veggies on the grill (just ho wmatthew mentioned above) are yum. My fave (and hubby and daughter) for my fresh squash, zucchini, suagr peas, green beans and peppers from my garden:
About 1-2 tbsp olive oil in pan on med, once it's hot add sliced veggies. Add Adobo spice (in Mexican isle of grocery store), onion powder, garlic powder, celery salt and sage. Cook a few minutes and flip. Add more spices.
YUM.

I make stir-fry out of this the same way sometimes - just add some cook pasta and cooked/cubed chicken to the pan.

Justine - usually i'm at peace with my HTML. But not this. not this

Mathew - yeah if no one can help me today, my next step is just asking Roni. Thanks for the veggie advice

Tara - oooh - we grow almost all of those in our garden too (or will once we get planting). thanks for the recipe

Anne - yeah me too. Mostly the haystack fries

Saute. I'm a big fan of olive oil, garlic and a hint of sea salt. Makes all veggies yummy!

Austin Gorton said...

Indeed, whip out the saute!

Our usual rotation of veggies (of which I'm getting a little sick and need some new ideas) include:

Asparagus: either roasted in the oven (brush w/olive oil, salt, pepper, maybe a little garlic powder and cook in whatever temp the oven is for whatever else you're cooking until they are firm but tender when squeezed) or sauteed in a pan w/olive oil, chopped garlic and/or diced onions.

Green Beans: boil them for 3-4 minutes then dunk them in ice water. Saute sliced or diced shallots in a pan with olive oil then add the beans and some diced garlic.

Acorn Squash: slice an Acorn squash in half and scoop out the seeds n'junk. Put the two halves, skin down, in a casserole dish and fill the bottom with about a 1/4 inch of water. Put a small pat of butter, black pepper and a wee bit of cayenne pepper on each squash half. Cover the dish and microwave for 12-15 minutes (depending on how big the squash is). This is one of our favorite "fall" veggies but you can usually find the acorn squash year round.

Broccoli: Heat up olive oil in a saute pan and then add broccoli. Saute for a few minutes, then add diced garlic (can you tell we love garlic?) and saute a few minutes more. Put the broccoli in a bowl and toss with a 1/4 cup (or a few heavy pinches) of Parmesan or other hard Italian cheese.

You can pretty much play around with seasoning on all those as you like (brown sugar instead of butter/pepper is really good on the squash, too).

Austin Gorton said...

Oh, and if you like them, adding some cherry or grape tomatoes with the beans or asparagus, towards the end of the saute, just long enough to warm them up and soften the skin, is really good too.

I second the above vegetable comments. We especially like grilling ours like Matthew said, with olive oil and balsamic, especially zucchini, asparagus, and red/orange peppers.

For green beans, I sautee with olive oil, garlic powder, and italian herbs.

Oh, another good thing is a grilled romaine heart. You can usually get them in the organic salad section. Just brush them really well with olive oil and balsamic, and grill each side for several minutes. The ends will turn black and crispy. Once it's done, take it off the grill and sprinkle with feta cheese. It's like an awesome salad.

I'm pretty sure hodgepodge is one word! At least that's what my dictionary says, but perhaps it's written both ways!

Yummy, I love vegetables! I was that weird kid who liked veges as much as dessert. I roast my veges in the oven. I toss them in oil with sea salt and pepper, or I toss in oil with a vegetable seasoning or some other seasoning blend.

Sarah Ahiers said...

Anisa - saute does sound like an option

Teebore - we hate tomatoes in this house, but the rest of it seems doable. thanks pal

Summer - those romaine hearts sound awesome.

Laura - we like veggies too, just need to zazz up our selection a bit. Roasting seems a good solution

I love the new fan!

As far as veggies go, I like roasting them (400-450 degrees) with some olive oil, S & P. Maybe add a little feta or parmesan, depending on what you have. Simple and yummy, although maybe not so good in the coming warm months.

And that, is all I can comment on. :) Don't know about the FB thingy.

Wish I could help with the FB icon...HTML and I are still coming to terms with our relationship.

As far as the veggies, I usually steam or grill.

I do have an awesome recipe for carrots, though. Hrmm... Thursday is recipe Thursday on my blog (with step by step pictures).

I'll post the recipe for you on 5/13 =) (I already have Sheppard's Pie for this week and next week is Cinco de Mayo...)

I'm unplugged, so I'm totally cheating to give you this info. Don't tell. ;)

This is where I found my FB button.

http://www.buttonshut.com/Facebook-Buttons/

If you follow the steps--you may have to sift through some ads--it will give you the code to add a button using the Add a Gadget feature under Layout in Blogger. Just add the HTML/Javascript gadget and copy and paste the code in there.

You can also find more buttons by googling Facebook buttons.

You can add pages under New Post on your dashboard. After you click New Post, just click Edit Pages at the top and it should walk you through setting those up. You can then add those links to the Pages gadget you should have under Layout. If there isn't a gadget, you probably have to change the HTML code, and I wouldn't recommend doing that unless you know what you're doing. It's too easy to mess something up.

Hope this helps. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

And you didn't see me. ;)

Oooh!I just love to see all that red on my MS's crit. That would be an editor after my own heart!

Nice job with the fan--it's gorgeous!

I'm where you're at--I couldn't find the plain "F" for facebook. :( As far as the links to take your readers to other pages other than your home, go here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/blogger/thread?tid=10bb905450652ae8&hl=en

I haven't done it yet, but will look into it when I have hours to kill. Let me know if it helps.
I Hope it does...

Ha, I like your hodge-podge! I'm sorry I don't know anything about adding a facebook icon to your page. I hope you get some answers. As for cooking the veggies, I am newly addicted to www.smittenkitchen.com and have been cooking vegetarian as a result (I am usually a HUGE beef eater) she has so many new ways to look at vegetables- I'm sold. I also recommend roastin' some beets. Delicious!
