In Which I Whine A Bit, Then Get To Work

So I spent part of yesterday writing a (nother) synopsis for Break Free. Yes I already had one. A 5 page one. And yes, I liked it. But I needed a 1-2 page one.

Good god I hate synopses with an all burning passion. It took me forever just to write a 5 page one.

I mean, it shouldn't be so hard. Logically, I should just be able to list out the top 6 or so major plot points of the novel, then dedicate a paragraph or so to each. But I reach the end and I realize the end really doesn't make sense unless I cover another plot point. And that plot point doesn't make sense unless I include this entire character and before you know it, I've rewritten the whole novel.

Ugh. I don't understand how query writing can come so easy to me, but synopsis writing? Pshaa.

Anyway, that's my rant for this month. No worries, really. I whined and bitched and moaned, but then I put my head down and worked hard and got it pumped out.

Which is something to remember. I'll listen to anyone's complaints at any time, if, at the end of things, you get working. Because the only way we're going to get there is by doing just that.

Deal? Deal.

In Which I Accomplish Things

'funny

A list of things I accomplished on my short hiatus:

1. Finished reading Glimpse out loud
2. Wrote my synopsis
3. Edited my synopsis
4. Judged youth poems for an annual B&N Poetry Contest with Hannah and Teebore. All time favorite poem? "Video Games Rule! (except for educational and baby ones)"
5. Tweaked Glimpse
6. Decided to test the query waters with Glimpse first, before I make any more large changes
7. Began to psych myself up for querying
8. Finished Elana's Possession

I feel like I'm missing something obvious, but hell if I can remember it.
All right! Share with me some of your recent accomplishments - I want to hear all about them so I can cheer you on!

In Which I Didn't Get Much Done

So last week I had a plan. I was going to hit the ground running and get my synopsis done. Or at least started.

Then Monday rolled around and all my best laid plans went to hell. My day job was cray-cray the whole week, so I pretty much got nothing done at all.

I wish my job was like this...

Also, I barely found time to read blogs (which is why my commenting was more infrequent last week).

But here we are, another Monday, and my plans this week are the same as last week. Get My Synopsis Written!

Since, as we can see all see, it's April, and my goal for this month is to begin to query (Excitement! Fear

And since I'm a person that doesn't like to start things half cocked, it's not an option to me to start querying without a synopsis, even to agents that don't need one.
Because I know if I don't write one before I start to query, my laziness will kick in and I'll probably never write one and therefore lose the opportunity to query those agents who request one.
It's just the way I am.

So cross your fingers for me this week. Synopsis - here I come!

In Which I've Been Putting Something Off

Yep, that's right. I've been avoiding something. Avoiding it like a zombie death plague.
What is it, you ask? Why, it's writing a Synopsis.

Yep. I don't want to do it. Even just thinking about it kind of pisses me off. I understand the purpose of them, but to me, they stink of, more or less, writing an outline for the book once it's already completed.

I already wrote an outline before I wrote the first draft. Even though the synopsis is not even remotely like an outline, it just feels like it to me. It feels like a step backwards.

So I've been putting it off. To be fair, by putting it off, I mean I've been working on other edits/revisions, so it's not like wasted time. But I'm running out of revisions to do, which means sometime soon, I will have to bite the bullet and write that stupid synopsis. And probably more than one, since some agents want different lengths.

Does anyone else have this dislike of synopses like I do? Any tips how to make it go down better/easier?
